			Western Digital Corporation memiliki sejarah panjang dalam industri elektronik sebagai pembuat sirkuit terpadu dan perusahaan produk penyimpanan. Western Digital didirikan pada tanggal 23 April 1970 oleh Alvin B. Phillips, seorang karyawan Motorola, sebagai General Digital, awalnya (dan secara singkat) membuat alat uji MOS. WD kemudian berubah secara cepat menjadi pembuat semikonduktor khusus, dengan modal awal yang disediakan oleh beberapa investor individu dan raksasa industri Emerson Electric Company. Sekitar Juli 1971, mengadopsi nama saat ini dan segera memperkenalkan produk pertamanya, WD1402A UART.
