OpenStreetMap (OSM) adalah sebuah proyek kerjasama / komunitas untuk membuat peta dunia yang dapat di edit. Ada dua (2) hal utama yang menyebabkan ini terjadi,
- Kebanyakan peta sifatnya komersial / susah untuk di peroleh.
- Banyaknya peralatan navigasi satelit yang portabel.
Peta dapat dibuat menggunakan alat navigasi satelit, foto udara, sumber bebas lainnya maupun dari pengetahuan lokal. Gambar maupun dataset vector tersedia untuk di download menggunakan lisensi Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0.
